GILLMOR ANNOUNCES MARION INDUSTRIAL CENTER TO RECEIVE $1.5 MILLION FOR JOB CREATION AND FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

COLUMBUS – State Senator Karen Gillmor (R- Tiffin) today announced the Marion Industrial Center (MIC) has been selected to receive a $1.5 million loan by the Development Financing Advisory Council, which approves all loans for companies that are considering locating or expanding in Ohio. The money will be used to complete a $3 million expansion of MIC’s rail infrastructure and intermodal operations, a project that is expected to create 12 new jobs and retain 12 others.

“The intermodal operations in Marion are a significant part of the county’s business infrastructure,” Gillmor said.  “Expanding its capacity is beneficial to our economic climate.”

Specifically, the funding for MIC will be used to construct two rail tracks, four rail turnouts and 5,000 feet of crane runways, as well as purchase three spotter trucks and install materials handling equipment. These upgrades will help improve productivity and safety while modernizing the facility for current operating practices. Once completed, MIC will be able to handle up to 250,000 containers per year as compared to its current capacity of 75,000 containers.

MIC is a 400-acre intermodal transportation center that employs more than 1,000 people both directly and indirectly and moves approximately 75,000 containers through central Ohio annually. Current tenants include ConAgra’s microwave popcorn production facility, General Mills, Boise Cascade and Bradley Mills, a bathroom fixtures manufacturer.

The loan for MIC now awaits final approval from the state Controlling Board, a seven-member committee that provides legislative oversight over certain capital and operating expenditures by state agencies and has approval authority over various other state fiscal activities.
